The word curious comes from the Latin root word cura, which means &ldquo;to care.&rdquo; The invitation to be curious about people is fundamentally an invitation to care about them. When you care about someone, you want to know their story. You become invested in the things that matter to them. Jesus&rsquo; posture of curiosity, his eager desire to see what God was doing in someone&rsquo;s life, was rooted in love for them. He was curious because he cared. Likewise, our curious exploration for people of peace should always be fueled by love.
Being curious is a hard thing to schedule into your week or to write into your ministry plan. It&rsquo;s got to be an all-the-time posture for how you relate to the people around you. Here are a few tips for embracing a posture of curiosity as you explore for a spark of the movement of God in people&rsquo;s lives.
Be curious about people&rsquo;s stories. This is basic, but it&rsquo;s a solid foundation for good evangelism and leadership development, and it&rsquo;s a strong place to start finding people of peace! Be curious to learn what&rsquo;s going on in people&rsquo;s lives. A little prophetic insight into people&rsquo;s past, like Jesus had with the woman at the well, can be helpful, but often this kind of insight is released by asking good questions and paying attention to what we see and hear. If there&rsquo;s a community where God has called you to be on mission (a neighborhood, a dorm, your workplace, a bar, etc.), get to know people in that place.&nbsp;
Ask about their families. Ask about where they grew up. Ask what they love about their community and what they wish was different; find out where they see beauty and brokenness. Find out about their spiritual background. Have they had spiritual experiences that impacted their lives? Have they ever tried prayer? Have they had painful experiences with church or Christian communities?
When we&rsquo;re genuinely curious, it&rsquo;s natural to learn about someone&rsquo;s family, about their hopes, dreams, and disappointments. It becomes natural to find out about their spiritual background and to be honest and vulnerable about our own spiritual journeys. It&rsquo;s possible to be more utilitarian in our search, looking for people of peace solely as a strategic step for ministry. But if that&rsquo;s our primary focus, then we&rsquo;re building on a foundation of using people, and that will never bear the kind of fruit that love can.
When a person shares something about their story, especially their spiritual journey, that&rsquo;s an opportunity to ask more questions and learn more about them. Listen to their words and stories with curious attention and at the same time listen and watch for what the Holy Spirit is saying or revealing.
Be curious about networks. One key trait of people of peace is that they unlock relational networks. In his historical account of the early church, the biographer Luke was meticulous in his attention to relational networks, usually using the Greek word oikos, which means &ldquo;house&rdquo; or &ldquo;household&rdquo; but often carries a broader meaning of an extended relational network. A household of people in the first century did not refer to a mother, father, and 2.4 children. Several generations lived in one household, often with servants and extended family members living together.
Over a dozen times Luke mentions people&rsquo;s oikos, referring not to their physical home but to their network of relationships. When Cornelius was baptized, his whole oikos was baptized as well, and Luke spells out in Acts 10:24 that that included relatives and close friends. The same was true for Lydia (Acts 16:15), Crispus (Acts 18:8), Stephanas (1 Corinthians 1:16), and the Philippian jailer (Acts 16:32‑34). You can quickly see the power of networks. In the book of Acts we see that the church didn&rsquo;t grow by the addition of individuals, it multiplied through entire communities bound together by social networks!
One tool that can help you recognize and explore networks in your context is called network mapping. It&rsquo;s extremely simple, but network mapping has been a game-changer for each of us. Here are a few simple steps to create a network map for you or those you&rsquo;re working with: 1. Draw a small circle on a piece of paper and put your name in the middle.
2. From there, draw lines to other circles representing the different places where you spend time and have relationships. At this point, your name may be surrounded by circles like your neighborhood, your kids&rsquo; school, your workplace, your favorite boba shop, your yoga class, a board game caf&eacute;, and so on.
3. Each of those circles represents a network of relationships, so your next step is to write the names of people you know in each of those places, and connect them with lines coming out of each circle.&nbsp;
As you look at your network map, what do you notice about the people you&rsquo;re connected to? Are you connected to mostly other Christians? Mostly non-Christians? Are there any people of peace on your network map? Your network map isn&rsquo;t just a list of names. Each line represents a relationship between you and another person. How strong are those lines? Are there people you have a close, committed relationship with? Are there lines that are merely acquaintances? You probably have both and that&rsquo;s okay. Your job as a missionary is to grow and strengthen your network. That means adding more names as you get to know more people in the places where you do life and strengthening the relationships you have by getting to know people better.
Paying attention to your networks as a community is a helpful embodiment of 1 Corinthians 12, that we&rsquo;re one body with many parts. Different ones of us will connect with different people and communities. None of us can reach everybody, but all of us can reach somebody. And that&rsquo;s the beauty of community, that in the diversity of our personalities and gifts and networks, we can do more together than any of us can do on our own.
